June 18 Blog

I know, I know- it’s been a long time since I updated the site and I apologize. I needed to unwind a little after the season and I’ve done that and now my summer workouts are in full swing. First of all, I want to say congratulations to the Boston Celtics organization and their fans for winning the NBA title. It’s quite an accomplishment. It’s my dream to be on a team that wins an NBA championship. I didn’t watch much of the game last night but I saw the end and the celebration. Watching Garnett and Pierce enjoy that moment was inspiring. Any competitive athlete will tell you- that’s the feeling we are chasing every day. The feeling, as Garnett said, of being “on top of the world.” I want to update you guys on what’s going on in my life.

After the season I took a quick trip to Vegas for a weekend of blackjack and the following weekend went down to Turks and Caicos Islands. Honestly, Turks and Caicos is one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen and the beach we stayed on was by far the prettiest beach I’ve been to. It was like being in a swimming pool with sand (if you can visualize that).

When I got back to Orlando I hadn’t touched a ball in over two weeks. I honestly just needed to get away from it for a short time. It was nice but I started working out again the last week of May. By now, I have settled into my summer workout routine. Mondays are basketball work, lifting, and agility work. Tuesdays are Pilates, basketball, and conditioning. Wednesdays are basketball and lifting. Thursdays are basketball, agility, and Pilates. And I finish out the week on Fridays with basketball, lifting, and conditioning. Each workout takes about an hour. Essentially I’m working out three to four hours a day. And obviously, I’m working on a variety of things. I want to get stronger (weight room). I want to get quicker and get my hips stronger for defense (Pilates and hip agility work). I can always use more core strength and flexibility (Pilates). And of course, I’m working on my game trying to improve my ball-handling and scoring off the dribble. So far, I’ve been pleased with my progress and hope that come October 1, I’ll be in peak physical condition to challenge for minutes.

The Magic have some decisions to make this offseason- free agency, trades, and the draft. But I believe 100% I’ll be back with the Magic. In fact, I don’t even think it’s an issue. I just need to get better and earn Stan’s trust and get some minutes. We shall see.

Other than that, I’ve done a couple things to keep me busy. I worked the K Academy for the 2nd straight year. For those that don’t know, K Academy is a fantasy camp for the 35 and older crowd. All the profits from the camp go to the Emily K Foundation and the Emily K Center. The camp is a lot of fun. This year I got to do a lot more coaching in games and practices. These men aren’t very good and they know it. But they play hard as crap and compete like hell. It makes for an exciting week. Besides the basketball, I’ve had the chance to meet a lot of good guys over the past two years. Coach K is at the top of his profession but many of the campers are at the top of their professions in finance, business, and even wine-making.

One more thing, I’ve gotten to hang out with Tiger a couple times and I just want to wish him a very speedy and healthy recovery from his knee injury. But can I just say “WOW!” The guy tears his ACL after the British Open then wins the PGA Championship and a bunch of other tourneys to finish last year off. Then he wins five of seven this year, including an amazing U.S. Open, all while battling severe injuries. He is the definition of a champion, plain and simple.

Aight, so I took a month-long break from blogging but I’ll be putting up posts and pics much more frequently over the next few months. By the way- the Red Sox look pretty good. Y’all take care.

Yes, I’m interested in updates!

Looks like your having fun this offseason… keep working on that agility, I’m really glad that you’re working on your defense as well as your offense. Hopefully all the hardwork will pay off, you’re my favorite player and I’m really rooting for you this upcoming season. But oh man, you’re a Red Sox fan?! Hey, atleast the me and you got one thing that we probably agree on… those Rays are getting pretty annoying! (Yankee fan here)

It really does seem like you had this season off, unfortunately. You are my fave player on my Magic and I hope Van Gundy ppputs you in as much as he should next season.

JJ its great that you get to stay but really… The coach needs to relize that you are the biggest threay on the team(other than Howard). The team needs you to open up the top and scare the SH** out of the other team. Get about 15 points then they’ll go to you leaving Dwhite open. the coach needs to under that. its what you do in middle school but hey it worked at Duke when they would all gaurd you and Sheldon Williams would be W I D E open down low. You need what you deserve playing time.

Hey, J.J.! I am a huge KG fan, and was so entertained by his emotional celebration. Hopefully you can get that feeling soon. I wish I could just make quick trips to Vegas or the islands. Haha. Don’t work too hard, that’s a pretty loaded workout schedule. Pilates is amazing! Thanks for inspiring me to try it, BTW. I laughed like crazy when I read, “These men aren’t very good and they know it. But they play hard as crap and compete like hell.” Hilarious! It’s amazing that you hang out with Tiger. Very cool. Have a wonderful golden birthday tomorrow, and know we’ll be celebrating with you here in Nebraska. Love, Ciera

ok maggie for JJ’s sake I really hope he didn’t read your about me on your youtube account. Pretty nice vid though.

Back on topic, while I was down at duke I was fortunate enough to see your trophy case in the hall of honor thing in the schwartz butters building. Amazing. Really, you should be so proud to have accomplished so much, and to have a degree from Duke University. It has been my biggest dream since…even before you came to duke. haha. I was actually down there for an alumni admissions forum, and I will be back at duke on the 13th for a college prep camp. I’m kind of intense about it. Please I would love for you to let us all know if you plan on attending any Duke games next season! I think you should. It would just warm my heart seeing you cheer on your alma mater. Best of luck, and please keep us posted…and have a relaxing off season! Oh, what do you think about duke football next season?

ashton | on 22/6/08

LML | on 21/6/08

Thanks for updating us with your summer plans. Looks to be quite a workout for you in the gym. Your work ethic is just impressive. Wishing you all the best and hoping you’ll be in tip top shape come October as planned.

Tiger is definitely an amazing athlete…and basically beat the field on one leg!!! The ratings must have been through the roof for the U.S. Open. I do wonder how the ratings will be for the rest of the year till Tiger comes back.

Also, HAVE A GREAT BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, JJ! I was starting to worry about you (just kidding)! It’s really great to hear from you! I understand that you wanted to take some off. I didn’t watch the final game but I read a little bit about it in SI. I really hope you will get to win an NBA title. I hope you had a great time in Vegas! Oooh and that beach sounds so pretty! Maybe you could posts some pics from that but you don’t have to. Good luck and have fun with all your workouts. They all sound like really hard and tiring workouts. I really really really really really really hope you get A LOT of playing time next year! All of us fans are with you 100% of the way! I hope you can get out on the court and show us all what you’re made of! I heard about you helping out at the K Academy recently. That’s great that you had an awesome time! If you have any pics from the camp maybe you could post them but you don’t have to. And that’s really cool that you’ve gotten to hang out with Tiger Woods. God only knows what I would do if I ever got to hang out with you… haha. Well, I don’t watch golf but I did hear about him winning the tournament on the news I think.
I’m making a video on my computer wishing you happy birthday and I’m almost finished it and I’m gonna finish today right after I finsih typing my comment, but I’m going to try to put it on youtube today and when I do I’ll post the link so you can see it!
Well I can’t wait to hear from you soon and see what kinds of pics you’ve got for us to see! You take care too :) .

lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of LOVE,
Maggie

Hey JJ,

Nice to see you reaching out to your fans. You summer routine seems like a pretty hard one, good luck on that. I really do hope you’ll get the chance to get some minutes next season. Being a pretty good shooter myself I know alot depends on getting trust and rythm. That being said, I’d like to thank you for signing my JJ Redick Photo back in February when I was over there, in Orlando! I was fortunate enough to save my money and attend six Magic games over a 2 week span, and you made it even better by stopping for an autograph! Thanks again and good luck next year!

Alaina | on 19/6/08

Hey JJ ! So good to hear from you. Glad you are working on your game. I hope you get a lotta playin time next year. So crazy… i was supposed to go to Turks and Caicos, we could’ve hung out ! Next time.
Have a great summer!

diana | on 19/6/08

birthday gorgeous, peace it easy!!!:D

diana | on 19/6/08

its about time you updated. hahaha, well i have always wanted to visit turks and caicos it looks gorgeous. your workouts sound intense with the conditioning and pilates, anyways i hope you had fun on your month long vacation. but was is it hard to get back in the routine of things after being away from it for so long. hope to hear from you soon if you dont update by next week happy birthd

Beatrice | on 19/6/08

OK…...I’ve found your flaw…..you’re a Boston fan!!!! Keep enjoying your summer. Practice hard but play harder!!

Claire | on 19/6/08

Great to hear from you. I’m flying down to duke in a couple of hours actually. I’m really excited, i haven’t been back there since when Battier and co. were playing. Please don’t ever give up JJ. I know you have the skills to play 20+ minutes a game. The Magic just seem to not appreciate what you have to offer. I wish they would let you go, so you can see what other teams would be interested. I understand that you will be back in Orlando next season, but I think you need a fresh start somewhere else. Van Gundy isn’t giving you a fair chance as he promised after last season’s summer league.

Nicole | on 18/6/08

I’m glad your back…haha…I bet the break was very refreshing. Yes, Tiger is the the definition of a champion. He rocks in every way imaginable. I’m glad to hear you’ll most likely be stayin w/ orlando. I think that youll do fine next season…im still prayin 4 ya…& yes btw the Redsox are doing fantastic! & they are about to win back to back world series. later
