Last week JJ participated in a softball tournament at the Osceola Softball Complex raising $7,500 to benefit Greater Orlando Children’s Miracle Network. Miracle child Allison Scheirer and her family were present at the opening ceremonies to throw out the first pitch along with Greater Orlando Children’s Miracle Network celebrity spokesperson J.J. Redick from the Orlando Magic and Miss Orlando, Lisa Van Alstine. In conjunction with the tournament, a silent auction was held containing various sports memorabilia to help raise funds.
Proceeds from the Marriott Vacation Club’s “Let’s Hit One for the Children’s Miracle Network Kids” softball tournament will benefit the pediatric programs at Shands Children’s Hospital at the University of Florida and Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children through Greater Orlando Children’s Miracle Network. The funds will be used to purchase patient care equipment, fund research, provide diversionary activities and produce patient education materials.
Children’s Miracle Network began in 1983 to actively support better health care for kids. Today more than 170 hospitals throughout the United States and Canada, specializing in treating children, make up Children’s Miracle Network. The organization is unique in that 100 percent of the money raised locally stays in the local community to benefit the participating Children’s Miracle Network hospital. Hey JJ, I’ve got no question for you, but I just wanted to say hi. I’m 13 years old, and you’ve been my idol since you were a freshman at Duke. I play basketball similar to your style, I’m a shooting guard and I love to shoot.
I just wanted to submit this in the hopes of getting to talk to you through email sometime. I totally understand if you don’t respond but I just wanted to write this to you.
I met you twice, both at Cameron (although I live in New Jersey, I travel down with my dad to see a Duke game once every 1 or 2 years), but I doubt you remember that.
Anyway, to contact me, my email is marcut@d-e.org
Thanks a lot,
Tommy Marcus
PS: I know you’ll get your chance in the NBA, and I’ll be at the Garden if you play the Knicks!
